Can you introduce yourself? Who is Zoë?

“I’m outgoing and the youngest sister of three brothers. That’s why I have thick skin. I love laughing, and I don’t take life too seriously. But I am a hard worker and make sure things get done. When it comes to work, I love having fun and being organized. Eyes on the prize, you could say.”

Why did you move to the Netherlands?

“My Latvian boyfriend and I met on a cruise ten years ago. In the beginning, he came to Ireland, but life there became a bit too normal for us. So we decided to try something new. The Netherlands is in between Ireland and Latvia, so we thought we’d give it a shot. We initially planned to stay for three months, but now we’ve been here for more than six years. Our daughter was even born here.”

How did your passion for hairstyling begin?

“I’ve always been more of a tomboy and used to tag along with my big brothers. Hair was the only girly thing I liked. I started playing with and coloring my mum’s hair when I was about 13—she encouraged me to try different things and trusted me to experiment on her, which was really brave. I owe a lot to her for that! I’ve been doing hair since I was 16, and I’ve always been extremely driven. Because of that, I became a manager when I was just 20. That made me think, ‘What now?’ So I decided to take a year off, but I still wanted to work with hair. That’s when I decided to work on a cruise ship, and six weeks later, I was on board.”

Wow, what was that experience like?

“It was amazing. I was the only hairstylist there, so I had to arrange and solve everything myself. Supplies were limited—you don’t get new products and colors every month. Often, people would be traveling for six months and needed a touch-up. If I didn’t have their color, I had to mix it myself. That forced me to be creative and gain new knowledge.”

Fast forward to now, you’ve joined KURO. Why?

“It’s a vibe. If you look at the website and Instagram, you can see it’s editorial, but it also has an edge. I don’t like using typical models. KURO is not a standard hair salon.”

How did you find out about KURO?

“I heard about Bianca through my old employer and have followed her ever since. She is incredibly inspiring with her work. She has won many awards, travels a lot, and has an immense amount of experience. KURO is a place where you can be yourself, but at the same time, it is of extremely high quality.”

What do you bring to the salon?

“My own style and personality. When I moved to the Netherlands, I noticed that people were quite timid when it came to trying new things. ‘Just act normal’ was the first thing I heard. I find that awful. I want to encourage clients to be more confident with color. That doesn’t mean blondes will walk out with blue hair, but it does mean they can push their boundaries within their own style. ‘Normal’ should never be the standard.”

What can clients expect when they sit in your chair?

“Volume—you can hear me before you see me. That’s my Irish background. I’m fun to be around. Clients can expect a lighthearted, cheerful, confident hair artist. I’m honest—I’ll tell you if something won’t work. Loud, proud, Irish.”

You’re a color specialist. How would you describe your style?

“Because I’ve been doing this for so long, I don’t have just one specific style. Over the years, I’ve learned various techniques and use them all to create specific looks. I love natural tones, but also extreme colors. My favorite? Color corrections. When someone has completely ruined their hair—through henna or a failed DIY dye job—that’s when I can really put my knowledge and experience to use. Hair is unpredictable. I love playing with it and using my creativity.”

What do you love most about working with hair color?

“Color gives confidence. A good haircut can add something extra, but color takes it to another level. It’s an art. I help people express themselves. I don’t find the term ‘hairstylist’ fitting. I call myself a hair artist. It’s an art form, but on hair.”

What do you hope to contribute to KURO as a color specialist?

“A bit of fun. Don’t be afraid to try something new. I want to encourage my colleagues to experiment. I love sharing knowledge and growing together.”

How do you see hair coloring evolving in the coming years?

“Where it used to be all about the cut and the color, it’s now more about healthy hair. The better the condition, the more beautiful the color, the better the haircut, and the longer it lasts. I think that’s a fantastic development.”

Why is healthy hair so important?

“I’m happy to give you your dream hair, but the condition has to be good. If you want white blonde, but your hair isn’t healthy, then I won’t do it. That’s something some salons don’t do—they only think about revenue. But ultimately, the health of the hair always determines how good the final result is.”

What makes KURO different from other salons when it comes to hair coloring?

“Every salon has something unique. At KURO, it’s all about style, quality, and confidence. The people who work here and the hair they create speak for themselves.”

What’s your number one piece of advice for people considering a big color change?

“If you’re investing in a hair color, don’t use Kruidvat shampoo. Invest in good hair care. I have clients who only come in twice a year, and their color still looks amazing because they use the right products. Hair care is just as important as the color itself.”
